Apple iPhone Duo Launches at $1,999: Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Changes the Game
Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market.
The company has unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone and one of the biggest changes to the iPhone design since the original device debuted.
Starting at $1,999, the iPhone Duo combines a compact outer screen with a much larger folding inner display, Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, enhanced multitasking, advanced cameras, Apple Intelligence, and the new Siri AI experience.
This is not simply an iPhone that folds.
Apple is attempting to turn the iPhone into something closer to a phone, tablet, AI assistant, gaming device, and productivity machine — all inside one pocketable device.
The Biggest Change: Two Displays in One iPhone
When closed, the iPhone Duo uses a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display, designed for normal everyday smartphone use.
Open the device and users get a much larger 7.6-inch inner display, giving the iPhone more space for video, gaming, productivity, reading, editing, and multitasking.
Apple says the inner display is about 50% larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Both displays support features including:
- ProMotion
- Always-On display
- Up to 3,000 nits of outdoor brightness
- Consistent aspect ratios between the inner and outer screens
Apple also plans to bring Apple Pencil USB-C support to the iPhone Duo later in the year.
That could make the device especially interesting for professionals, students, designers, creators, and users who normally carry both a smartphone and tablet.
Apple Is Making Multitasking a Major Selling Point
One of the strongest arguments for a foldable phone is the ability to do more than one thing at once.
Apple is leaning heavily into that idea.
With the iPhone Duo opened, users can run two apps side by side using Split View.
That means someone could browse Safari while messaging, participate in a Zoom meeting while reviewing documents, compare products across two windows, or interact with Siri AI while keeping another app visible.
Users can even open two windows of the same app and save frequently used app combinations.
This could transform the iPhone from primarily a consumption device into a more serious productivity tool.
Siri AI Becomes More Important
The iPhone Duo will also become one of Apple’s major platforms for Siri AI.
Powered by Apple Intelligence, the redesigned Siri can use personal context across apps including messages, email, photos, and other information stored on the device.
Siri AI can also understand what is currently displayed on the screen and take actions based on that information.
For example, users may be able to ask Siri about something they are viewing, search across apps for information, write or edit text, and perform tasks without constantly switching applications.
On a large foldable screen, that becomes much more useful because Siri can remain visible alongside the content being discussed.
Apple is effectively positioning AI as part of the interface rather than simply another app.
A20 Pro Brings Serious Performance
Inside the iPhone Duo is Apple’s A20 Pro processor, the same chip used in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
Apple says the device can deliver up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.
The chip includes:
- A 6-core CPU
- A 7-core GPU
- Dual 16-core Neural Engines
- Increased unified memory bandwidth
- A 2-nanometer manufacturing process
Apple also designed a custom vapor-chamber cooling system to help maintain performance during gaming, multitasking, and demanding AI workloads.
That thermal system is especially important in a foldable phone because manufacturers have less internal space available for cooling components.
The Camera Uses the Foldable Design in New Ways
The iPhone Duo includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera.
But the more interesting story is how Apple is using the second display.
Users can take photos using the higher-quality rear cameras while previewing themselves on the outer display.
A feature called Duo Preview lets the person being photographed see the live camera frame.
Apple has also introduced Smart Take, which uses on-device AI to analyze a scene and automatically capture a picture when subjects appear ready.
Other camera features include:

Because the phone can stand partially folded, users can also record videos or make FaceTime calls without needing a tripod or stand.
Apple Is Trying to Solve the Biggest Foldable Problem: Durability
Foldable smartphones have historically faced questions surrounding hinges, screen creases, scratches, and long-term durability.
Apple appears to have spent significant engineering effort addressing those concerns.
The iPhone Duo uses a grade 5 titanium body and a hinge made from more than 100 components.
Ceramic Shield protects the rear of the device, while Ceramic Shield 2 covers the outer display.
Apple says the outer protection offers three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.
The inner folding screen includes multiple reinforced layers, including scratch-resistant material, high-strength glass, specialized adhesives, and a titanium support plate.
The phone also carries an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating.
Durability will still need to be proven through long-term real-world use, but Apple clearly understands that buyers spending nearly $2,000 will expect the hinge and folding display to last.
Battery Life Could Be Another Major Advantage
Instead of using one traditional battery, Apple placed a battery on each side of the folding device.
The two batteries work together as one system.
Apple estimates:
- Up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display
- Up to 44 hours using the outer display
- Up to 24 hours of mixed use across both displays
The iPhone Duo can also reach approximately 50% charge in around 20 minutes using wired fast charging.
Wireless charging can reach 50% in around 30 minutes using compatible MagSafe or Qi2 chargers.
There Is One Major Change: No Physical SIM Anywhere
Apple is making the iPhone Duo eSIM-only worldwide.
Removing the physical SIM tray gives Apple more internal space for components such as the battery.
The device also supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, and Apple’s next-generation cellular modem technology.
iOS 27 Was Built Around the Foldable Design
Apple has redesigned parts of iOS 27 specifically for the iPhone Duo.
Controls can move to the side of the screen to create more vertical space.
The Dynamic Island adapts to the new screen orientation.
When opened, the phone can display multiple Home Screen areas, widgets, apps, and information simultaneously.
Apps such as Netflix, Zoom, and Slack are already being optimized to take advantage of the larger folding display.
That ecosystem support could become one of Apple’s biggest advantages.
Foldable hardware alone is not enough.
The software needs to understand what users should do with the additional screen space.

Samsung, Google, Motorola, and several Chinese smartphone manufacturers have spent years developing foldable phones.
Apple waited.
That delay may now become part of its strategy.
Instead of simply producing another foldable phone, Apple is attempting to combine foldable hardware with iOS, Apple Intelligence, Siri AI, powerful silicon, optimized apps, cameras, and its massive ecosystem.
The biggest question is whether customers believe those advantages justify a $1,999 starting price.
If consumers embrace the iPhone Duo, foldable smartphones could quickly move from an expensive niche category into the premium mainstream.
And because millions of developers build specifically for Apple’s ecosystem, the introduction of a foldable iPhone could also accelerate the development of apps designed around larger, flexible displays.
